Brian, from the West Midlands, developed a venous leg ulcer after grazing his leg on the end of his bed, an injury he initially thought was minor. When the wound failed to heal, it quickly began to affect every aspect of his life.
Living with a chronic leg wound led Brian to withdraw from daily activities. “I find excuses not to go out,” he says. “I don’t socialise - I can’t tell you the last time I went to a pub.”
The physical symptoms, combined with worry and discomfort, have significantly impacted his mental health, leaving him feeling isolated and disconnected. His wife has also felt the strain, as their family life and social routines have changed dramatically.
Brian’s experience highlights how venous leg ulcers don’t just affect physical health - they can lead to social isolation, reduced quality of life, and emotional distress for both patients and their families.
