This year‘s programme also focused on another increasingly important topic in healthcare: sustainability. Globally, healthcare is responsible for 4.4% of all CO2 emissions [1]. To achieve sustainability goals, healthcare facilities must also become more sustainable. Disinfection plays a central role in this transformation. Gerlinde Angerler from the Austrian Society for Hospital Hygiene (ÖGKH) and Prof Dr Andrea Grisold from the Diagnostic and Research Institute for Hygiene, Microbiology and Environmental Medicine at the Medical University of Graz were the scientific directors of the event. They charmingly led the audience through a varied programme. The first day‘s programme included exciting presentations on ’Bacterial Biofilms and Postoperative Wound Infections‘, vaccines, the ’Green Hospital‘ concept (do sustainability and hygiene go together?) and questions on ’Aseptics and Antiseptics, Sterilisation and Disinfection‘. On the second day, participants were offered an update on the EU Drinking Water Directive and a presentation of a ’Next Generation Outbreak Simulation‘. Dr Marco Krewing, Scientist at the HARTMANN SCIENCE CENTRE, presented ’New strategies and approaches to hand hygiene‘ before Prof Dr Birgit Willinger (Medical University of Vienna) discussed whether Candida auris is harmless or a deadly threat. The ten exhibition stands set up by HARTMANN in the mountain resort were also very practical. Participants were able to test sustainable product innovations such as the new Bacillol® Zero wipes and find out first-hand about wipe qualities, hand care or topics such as nosocomial infections and wound irrigation. The HARTMANN Hygiene Days are highly valued by hygiene specialists because they offer time for networking and are certified by the Austrian Health and Nursing Association (ÖGKV) with 21 continuing education points. HARTMANN Hygiene Days in Austria - Recognised further education Summit meeting on hygiene management On 25 and 26 September, around 110 hygiene specialists met at the HARTMANN Hygiene Days Austria at the Bergresort Werfenweng near Salzburg to find out first-hand about the latest developments in infection prevention.
