Heidenheim/Hamburg, June 20, 2022. Since the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic at the latest, it has been known how important good hand hygiene is. The digital NosoEx® system by GWA Hygiene provides targeted support for nurses, doctors and hygienists. As part of its digital approach, HARTMANN will begin distributing the hygiene solution for healthcare facilities, thereby strengthening its Mission: Infection Prevention program.
More than half a million people in Germany become infected with nosocomial infections (generally: hospital-acquired infections) every year. Concern about infection during hospitalization is high and among patients; 81% rank it among their most significant fears during inpatient treatment [1]. "Good hand hygiene is one of the most important measures for breaking chains of infection. Our high-performance hand disinfectants play a central role in this. However, we are now going one step further and offering a digital solution that supports medical facilities in ensuring and strengthening hand hygiene," said Alexander Schwieger, Global Head of HARTMANN's Disinfection business unit and Managing Director of BODE Chemie, a HARTMANN subsidiary and manufacturer of the Sterillium® disinfectant brand.

By partnering with GWA Hygiene, HARTMANN is expanding its Mission: Infection Prevention. The holistic approach to infection prevention now offers another established digital solution. "A great deal is done every day in clinics and care facilities to maintain health. With our digital offering, we want to create clear added value that directly protects employees and patients," Alexander Schwieger explains further. "Awareness of hand hygiene compliance has evolved greatly over the last two years. Nevertheless, the pandemic has also revealed areas where further development needs to continue."

HARTMANN as sales partner of NosoEx®: Hand disinfection digitally recorded

Managing directors Maik Gronau and Tobias Gebhardt of GWA Hygiene, a start-up from Stralsund and Alexander Schwieger have now agreed on a cooperation: HARTMANN will take over the distribution of the GWA product NosoEx®, a digital tool for tracking and recording hand disinfection. The system consists of sensors and associated software. Doctors, nursing staff and cleaning staff in a hospital are equipped with a transponder. At each disinfectant dispenser, a sensor module records its use – anonymized and by staff group. The data is sent to the hospital's hygiene department, which can see whether all employees are disinfecting their hands sufficiently or whether action is needed. The quantity of disinfectant dispensed is also recorded in order to determine the stock level and ultimately the quality of hand disinfection. After all, an insufficient volume of hand disinfectant leads to gaps and thus insufficient hand disinfection.

HARTMANN will take over the distribution of the GWA product NosoEx®
The introduction of NosoEx® in maximum-care hospitals with more than 1,500 beds resulted in an overall increase in hand disinfection of 27% – a strong indication that both awareness of hand hygiene and its application are increasing through the use of targeted measures and solutions [2].

Hand hygiene can save lives

Maik Gronau came up with the idea when he was in the hospital a few years ago. "I noticed that one group performed hand disinfection more frequently than the other. The quesstion arose: why is this so and, above all, is it allowed to be so?", the business information specialist recounts. The solution is NosoEx®, which refers by name to nosocomial infections in medical facilities. "A crucial way to avoid hospital infection is hand disinfection. Accordingly, a standard for hospitals is essential here." Tobias Gebhardt adds, "In the 21st century, such data must be available at the push of a button –that's what drives us. We want to be the digital assistant for hospital hygiene. Hygiene is a team sport and we are now clearly practicing it through our synergy with HARTMANN." Alexander Schwieger adds, "We are convinced that this measure can significantly increase hand hygiene compliance, greatly prevent infections and ultimately save lives."
