Sports are good for varicose veins: Exercise gets the venous system moving

Radfahren ist bei Venenleiden die ideale Sportart.
Cycling is the ideal sport when
you have weak veins.
Spring is the ideal time of the year to start doing some sports again. Regular physical training is not only a relief for the whole organism. By doing sports, a lot can be done to prevent starburst and varicose veins from getting worse, when you have weak veins. But, not all types of sport are suitable in case of venous conditions.

It is primarily a matter of genes whether a person develops a vein weakness in the course of his life. Nonetheless, persons affected can do quite a lot against their congenital weak connective tissue. Regular physical training is one of the most important actions. Although venous conditions cannot be healed, movement does reduce the complaints considerably.

Which types of sport can be recommended in particular?

In case of weak veins, physicians recommend types of sport in which the leg muscles are moved constantly over a longer period of time. Constant movement activates the so-called muscular venous pump, which ensures that the spent blood is transported back in direction of the heart through the veins in the leg. The following types of sport are recommended in particular:

  • Cycling
  • Jogging
  • Walking
  • Inline skating
  • Swimming

The following activities also have a positive effect on the venous system:

  • Going for walks,
  • rambling,
  • dancing,
  • aerobics
  • or using the stairs instead of the lift.

Independently of which type of sport is done, rather carry out short exercising units several times a day than one long training session once a week. Due to the regular physical strain the muscle mass increases faster which in turn has a positive effect on the performance of the muscular venous pump and thus on the function of the venous system.

Not all types of sport are suitable for weak veins

However, there are types of sport which are not recommended as they can further increase a vein weakness. This applies to most strength sports (such as weight lifting) and types of sport, such as squash or tennis, which due to the abrupt movements can damage weak veins in addition.

Those who wear compression stockings due to their vein weakness should continue to wear them during the exercise. The only exception here is swimming, as compression exists already due to the existing pressure under water. Due to the pressure, compression stocking reduce the cross-section of the veins and thus support the return of the blood in the veins to the heart. Moreover, the gradual reduction of the vein cross-section from the foot to the upper thigh increases the positive effect of the muscular venous pump activated by the physical exercise.

Today’s compression stockings can no longer be compared to those of the past. Today’s compression stockings can hardly be differentiated from normal stockings any more and are available in many different colors. The material is permeable to air and very kind to the skin. As the case may be, it is important that compression stockings are individually adapted so that the function of the weakened veins is assisted in an ideal manner.
